![]() The National Pension Plan is operated by the state and is funded by government subsidies and the insurance premiums paid by the insured. The system targets all residents in Japan and aims at contributing to the maintenance and the improvement of citizens' healthy life, providing necessary support related to aging, disadvantages and death.
Everyone including foreign nationals between the ages of 20 and 60 must enroll in the National Pension Program if he/she is not enrolled in any other public pension plan such as the welfare pension plan. A pension pocketbook will be issued upon the enrollment.
As a rule, in order to meet the benefit requirements, you must live in Japan for at least 10 years prior to reaching your 65th birthday and pay the monthly premium during this period. After you reach the age of 65, a pension will be paid to those satisfying the above conditions. If you meet the certain requirements, the pension will be paid in case you are injured, sick or your family becomes a single-parent family.
Sometimes foreign residents leave Japan before meeting the benefit requirements. It is possible for them to obtain a refund of their pension contributions if they meet certain conditions, such as having paid the monthly premium for six months or more, and having applied for the refund within two years of leaving Japan at the Japanese Pension Service Office.
