To enter Japan, foreign nationals must possess a valid passport issued by their home country and a visa issued by a Japanese embassy or consulate and stating the purpose of their visit.
The period of stay is decided according to the status of residence indicated on a visa. Your period of stay and status of residence are stamped in your passport. You must submit an application at the Immigration Office in case of the following circumstances. If not, you may be punished or deported.
When you want to leave Japan for a short period of time and retain your current visa status, you must apply for a re-entry permit. There are two types of re-entry permits, single or multiple. A single re-entry permit will allow you to leave and then re-enter Japan only once. Multiple re-entry permits will allow you to leave and re-enter Japan any number of times. It is valid during your period of stay currently permitted (within three years).
If you obtain a Permanent Resident Permit, you can permanently live in Japan while keeping your foreign nationality. Please inquire the Immigration Bureau for further details.
A foreign national who lost his/her Japanese nationality can apply for naturalization to get his/her Japanese nationality back. In order to be naturalized as a Japanese national, it is necessary to get the related permission from the Japanese Ministry of Justice. Please inquire the Regional Legal Affairs Bureau for further details.
