Maebashi has two train service lines.
◆ JR Line
The JR Line is used for a long distance transport to and from Maebashi.
The Ryomo Line (between Takasaki and Oyama) and the Joetsu Line (between Takasaki and Niigata) run through the city.
There are also the Takasaki Line and the Shinkansen (bullet train) between Takasaki and Tokyo.

◆ Jomo Electric Railway
It runs between Chuo Maebashi and Nishi-Kiryu.

There are 39 bus routes in the city. Most bus routes start and end at JR Maebashi Station.
◆ How To Ride a Bus
Get on from the rear door of the bus and take a numbered ticket from the dispensing machine, and then take a seat. Push the “Stop(Teisha)” button when your stop is called. Your fare should be indicated with the number on the fare list, displayed above the driver, which corresponds to the number on your ticket. Pay the corresponding amount of money into the machine by the driver, and get off the bus. You can change money at the same machine. |
◆ My Bus
A bus line, called “My Bus”, is also running along a route through central Maebashi. The fare is only 100 yen per ride.
There are northbound and southbound route.

Taxis in Japan, as in other countries, charge a base fare for a certain distance, and then an additional fee for each subsequent 100m. These fees differ according to the size of the taxi. Rates increase between 10:00pm and 5:00am.
A vacant taxi will be marked by the characters “ 空車 ”.
Be careful when approaching a taxi the rear left-hand side door will open automatically. If you are unable to speak Japanese, show the driver your destination on a map.
◆ Telephoning for a Taxi
There are many taxi companies in Maebashi. Neither the telephone operators nor the taxi drivers will speak much English, so please be prepared. When calling for a taxi, be sure to state your name, pick up location, number of people the taxi is for and your destination.
