Education

◆ Japanese Schools
The Japanese school year begins in April. Elementary school consists of grades 1 - 6, junior high school grades 1 - 3, and high school grades 1 - 3. For Japanese citizens, elementary and junior high school education is compulsory.

◆ Enrolling Foreign Children
Foreign children residing in Japan can enter Japanese schools like Japanese children. However, those who wish to attend can freely enter elementary and junior high schools.

◆ Pre-school education
There are four municipal kindergartens, and several private kindergartens in Maebashi. A fee is charged for both.

◆ Elementary and Secondary Education
In public elementary school and junior high school, tuition fees and textbooks are free in Japan. However there are other associated costs such as school lunches and extra educational materials. For those families that are financially difficult to send their children to school, there is a system that supports the costs of school lunch and educational materials. Please consult with a school or the board of Education.

◆ Higher Education
Those who graduated from the junior high school may attend senior high school if they pass an entrance exam and pay the necessary fees.
